Ukraine May Exchange Belarusian Kardash for Journalists Held in Russian Captivity
Dmytro Lubinets, the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for Human Rights, stated that the Ukrainian side is negotiating with Russia for the release of 28 Ukrainian journalists from captivity, writes Radio Svoboda.
"Yes, we are negotiating. For various categories of hostages, including a separate list of journalists and representatives of the journalistic community, is in our work," Dmytro Lubinets said at a press conference in Kyiv.
In turn, Andriy Pasternak, Head of the Joint Center of the Security Service of Ukraine, answering a question about the exchange of Belarusian journalist Inna Kardash, who is accused of espionage in Ukraine, noted that this information is "restricted for dissemination."
"This information is restricted for dissemination. We must achieve a result, return everyone. Regarding proposals to the Belarusian or Russian side. If we comment on every step we take, then why negotiate? Will we then write in all media, magazines, and contact specifically through the media?" he believes.
Dmytro Lubinets added that in such a case "there will definitely be no results." He also reported that Ukraine is trying to free foreign citizens, both civilian and military, from Russian captivity.
"Yes, we have been fortunate to return citizens of foreign countries. [...] We constantly receive requests from embassies. Lately, I have been receiving letters from my colleagues, ombudsmen, who are seeking help to return their citizens who are in Russia in the status of either civilian hostages or prisoners of war," added the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for Human Rights.
Inna Kardash was detained this year on January 21 and was charged with suspicion of espionage on behalf of the State Security Committee of Belarus.
At the time of her detention, Inna Kardash was already working in the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. According to the investigation, she contacted the KGB through a citizen of Belarus, who "knowingly, for her, carried out confidential cooperation with the special services of Belarus."
