Giant Tortoises Released on Pacific Island After 180 Years of Absence

Scientists have released 158 young giant tortoises on Floreana Island in Ecuador's Galapagos archipelago. Thus, the species has returned to the island after almost 180 years of absence. This is part of a program to restore the population and ecological balance of the region, writes The Guardian.

The tortoises, aged 8 to 13, were raised at the breeding center of the national park on Santa Cruz Island. Before being released into the wild, they were selected based on genetic traits similar to Floreana's historical population. For several years, scientists conducted research to find the right genetic lines and ensure the animals' suitability for life in the wild.

The release took place at the start of the rainy season, which should help the tortoises adapt better. They are expected to contribute to the dispersal of plant seeds and influence the restoration of vegetation cover.

The restoration program began with genetic research and controlled breeding. In total, more than 700 tortoises were successfully raised in captivity, and the first batch was released to test their ability to survive in natural conditions. The animals have been observed since their growth to ensure they are large enough to defend themselves against predators.

Giant tortoises disappeared from Floreana in the 19th century due to intensive hunting by sailors and the introduction of invasive animal species that worsened their living conditions. The last local individuals disappeared around 1840. New research has shown that their absence affected the vegetation and the structure of the ecosystem.

Historically, the island was home to thousands of tortoises, and now, thanks to genetic restoration, an attempt is being made to restore their population and natural processes in this region.
