New Dutch PM spoke out against the unanimity principle in EU decision-making
Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, who recently took office , stated that the European Union should abandon the unanimity principle when making some decisions. According to him, Hungary's recent veto on a loan to Ukraine demonstrates that the current system can slow down the EU's response to important issues, Euronews reports .

Jetten noted that the new Dutch government advocates reducing the number of decisions made unanimously, as this complicates and slows down the work of the European Union.
He emphasized that European leaders must adhere to previously reached agreements. In his opinion, if these agreements are not fulfilled, the European Commission should consider possible response measures.
He also called for support for Ukraine in the coming months so that it can continue to resist Russian aggression. According to the Dutch Prime Minister, with declining support from the US, Europe needs to take on more responsibility.
Separately, Jetten spoke about Ukraine's prospects for joining the EU. He believes it is too early to name a specific accession date, although dialogue on this issue is possible.
At the same time, in his opinion, the enlargement of the European Union should be considered from a geopolitical perspective, but acted upon cautiously so as not to undermine the foundations of the European project.
In addition, the prime minister touched upon issues of security and energy, noting the possible consequences of international conflicts for gas prices and strategic reserves. He emphasized the need to prepare for long-term challenges and the potential impact of military events on the economy.
Overall, Jetten stated that the Netherlands is returning to an active role in European politics, intends to strengthen defense, maintain economic competitiveness, and participate in shaping the next long-term EU budget, focused on key areas of development — defense, technology, and climate.
