In Berestovitsa, a coach who gave a 17-year-old student doping to win at competitions will be tried
Since August 2025, a 54-year-old coach began actively preparing his protégé for major freestyle wrestling competitions, daily monitoring her weight.
The Investigative Committee reports that not only athletic results were at stake, but also the extension of his prestigious 'coach of the highest category' qualification.
"He forced the young athlete to lose weight at any cost to enter the declared weight category of up to 40 kilograms. Every gram was difficult to lose, and it seemed that the dream of victory was slipping away," writes the Investigative Committee.
On the day of departure for the competition, the coach decided on an extreme step: a pill ended up in his hands, which, in his opinion, "was supposed to help overcome the last obstacle."
"Before the start, the athlete indeed reached the required weight. She confidently bypassed her rivals and ascended to the highest step of the podium. But the joy was short-lived: a doping test, taken after the victory, revealed a prohibited substance. The girl didn't even suspect this, and, upon learning the results, was in shock," the Investigative Committee reported.
During interrogation, the suspect fully admitted guilt. He reported that he had been training the future champion since she was eight years old and always considered her very promising. For the sake of the talented athlete's participation in prestigious competitions, he gave her the pill. The man had no theoretical knowledge in the field of anti-doping and, according to him, passed qualification tests by guesswork.
The man has been working as a freestyle wrestling coach since 2003 and had not previously been brought to criminal responsibility.
A criminal case has been initiated under Part 2, Article 331-2 (intentional use against a known minor athlete of substances included in the Republican List of substances and methods prohibited in sport) of the Criminal Code.
The sanction of the article provides for a fine, restriction of liberty, or up to two years of imprisonment.
