68-year-old McCasland disappeared on the morning of February 27. He left his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, without his phone, and nothing has been known about him since. The day after his disappearance, police began searching, and the FBI later joined them.
During his military service, McCasland was involved in the development of experimental military technologies. He was the chief engineer for the US Department of Defense's GPS program, led a space laser project, and supervised special programs at the National Reconnaissance Office. He also headed a research laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, which UFO enthusiasts link to the study of possible debris from an alien craft after the Roswell incident in 1947.
After retiring, McCasland collaborated with To The Stars, a company founded by Blink-182 musician Tom DeLonge. It studies data on unidentified aerial phenomena.
The general's disappearance occurred a week after US President Donald Trump stated that authorities should declassify documents related to UFOs and possible extraterrestrial life.
McCasland's wife, however, urged against spreading conspiracy theories. According to her, the general retired about 13 years ago and does not possess any "special secrets" about UFOs. She also noted that her husband does not have dementia and could not have simply gotten lost.
Police have not yet found signs of foul play but are considering all possible theories. Dozens of rescuers and volunteers are participating in the search, using drones, helicopters, service dogs, and analyzing surveillance camera footage.
