Trump declared that he must participate in the selection of Iran's new leader
In a conversation with Axios, US President Donald Trump declared that he must participate in the selection of a candidate for the role of Iran's new leader. He does not consider the son of the assassinated Ayatollah Ali Khamenei a suitable candidate.

"They are wasting their time. Khamenei's son is not a heavyweight," Trump told Axios, referring to reports that the main candidate to succeed Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated on Saturday, is his son Mojtaba.
"I must participate in the appointment, as with Delcy [Rodriguez] in Venezuela. Khamenei's son is unacceptable to me. We want someone who will bring peace and harmony to Iran," Trump stated.
Delcy Rodriguez took office as interim president of Venezuela in January 2026 after the Americans captured the previous leader Nicolas Maduro, under whom Rodriguez was vice-president.
