He stated that by analyzing attempts at color revolutions in Georgia, Serbia, and Iran, the leadership saw that special forces units showed the best results in preventing them.
Three years ago, the Minister of Internal Affairs emphasized the development of special forces units of the internal troops, and allegedly 13 active detachments successfully detain "dangerous criminals and extremists."
"Last year, we expanded our detachments. We transformed some into military units. For instance, the "Buran" detachment in the Gomel region was recently transformed into a military unit. It was assigned the number 3033," Karpenkov noted.
He also added that in the near future, the "Storm" special forces detachment in the Brest region will also be transformed into a military unit. In addition, the capital's military unit 5448 will be transformed into an operational designation unit, and military unit 3310 from the Minsk region — into a special forces brigade.
He also noted that the combat potential of special forces detachments has been significantly increased.
"They received new weapons: grenade launchers, ATGM systems, flamethrowers, heavy-caliber machine guns, BTR-82, as well as new unmanned aerial vehicles, to which we paid great attention last year. We have created three centers for unmanned aerial aviation. And now a fourth center will be created in the "Buran" special forces detachment in the Gomel region," added Nikolai Karpenkov.
