Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves Robles "in protest against the poor living conditions of the population in Cuba" ordered the closure of the republic's embassy and the expulsion of diplomatic personnel.
As reported by Reuters, the demonstrative move took place at a public event in the presence of the U.S. ambassador.
Chaves stated that Costa Rica does not recognize the legitimacy of Cuba's communist regime and called for "cleansing the hemisphere of communists."
