Mohseni-Ejei was 79 years old. He served as Minister of Intelligence and National Security from 2005 to 2009 during the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
He was considered a hardliner and a follower of Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi — an Islamic radical and spiritual mentor to Ahmadinejad.
Since July 2021, Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei had been appointed as the new head of Iran's judiciary, replacing Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, who won the 2021 presidential elections.
