NATO countries refused to join the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz announced by Donald Trump, although some European allies are ready to participate in ensuring the security of maritime navigation in the region, according to The Moscow Times.
As reported, the US began an operation to blockade the Strait of Hormuz in response to the breakdown of negotiations with Iran. More than 15 American warships are involved in it.
Trump stated that other countries would join the initiative, but European allies of the US, including the UK and France, declared that they would not participate specifically in the blockade.
"We do not support the blockade," UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer told the BBC. "My decision is absolutely unequivocal: no matter how significant the pressure – and it was very significant – we will not allow ourselves to be drawn into this war."
Instead, they propose an alternative approach — a mission to ensure freedom of navigation and openness of the Strait of Hormuz after tensions subside. Country leaders emphasize that they do not want to be involved in military conflict and view their role as exclusively defensive and stabilizing.
Meanwhile, the creation of an international coalition involving more than 30 countries is being discussed, which will coordinate the escort of civilian vessels and guarantee the security of maritime routes.
In parallel, it is noted that the situation in the region remains tense: Iran has accumulated significant volumes of oil on tankers outside the strait and continues exports at a level of about 1.8-2 million barrels per day, mainly towards China.
