Mikhail Gerasimenko, Director of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics, spoke about the complex operations performed at the center.
"Approximately 25-30 operations are performed daily at the center. These are mainly operations of the highest level of complexity. For comparison, I can say that one operation for scoliotic spinal deformity can last up to 11 hours. Operations for severe injuries of the pelvis, bones, and limbs can also last 5-6 hours," — Gerasimenko said on STB.
He himself specializes in knee joint pathology. This includes arthroscopic treatment, knee joint prosthetics. "Of course, I don't have to go to the operating room as often now as I did in my youth, when I worked as an ordinary doctor in a department and performed 2-3 operations a day. Now I try to go to the operating room a few times a week to work," — shared the RSPC director.
In Belarus, over 19.5 thousand joint replacement operations were performed in 2025.
"Whereas 2-3 years ago, the waiting time for an operation was 3-5 years (depending on the region), it is now from 1 month to 5 months. On average across the country — about 3 months."
Approximately 33% of all endoprostheses implanted in the country are of Belarusian production.
"I think that within 2-3 years we will reach an absolute majority of domestic endoprostheses being implanted in our country. But this will not be at the expense of quality. Our domestic endoprostheses are absolutely not inferior in quality to imported ones," — assured the RSPC director.
