Zelenskyy Condemns US Decision to Extend Sanctions Relief Against Russia
In his Telegram channel, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy states that the easing of sanctions against Russia does not correspond to the real situation in the war and diplomacy, and on the contrary — creates an illusion for the Russian leadership that aggression can be continued.

«Just this week, the Russians launched more than 2,360 attack drones, over 1,320 guided aerial bombs, and almost 60 missiles of various types at our cities and communities,» Zelenskyy provides statistics.
It is separately emphasized that revenues from the sale of Russian oil are effectively funding the war. According to Zelenskyy's estimates, there are over 110 tankers of the so-called «shadow fleet» at sea, transporting over 12 million tons of oil. This could bring Russia about 10 billion dollars, which are used to continue hostilities.
He concludes that, on the contrary, pressure against Russia must be increased: limiting oil exports and preventing the delivery of tankers to ports.
Prior to this, on April 18, the Donald Trump administration extended the exemptions allowing countries to buy sanctioned Russian oil and petroleum products. Washington aims to thus curb global energy prices, which have sharply risen amid the American-Israeli war with Iran.
The US Treasury Department allowed the purchase of oil loaded onto vessels as of Friday until May 16 — this is an extension of the original 30-day authorization, which expired on April 11, according to a document published on the department's website.
However, the extension was issued two days after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Washington would not continue the authorization that allowed countries to purchase Russian oil without the risk of US sanctions.
