During a visit to Naroulia District, the conversation turned to increasing areas by returning lands to agricultural use that suffered after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident. Across the entire Homiel region, 1.3 thousand hectares were thus added in a year.
«We need to revive these lands. Whatever it costs us — we need to return to those lands that we had in Soviet times. And we can do it,» Lukashenka said.
As a result of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster, 23% of Belarus's territory was contaminated with radionuclides, including 1.8 million hectares of agricultural land. One of the first effective protective measures in overcoming the consequences of the disaster was the restriction of economic use of land. More than 265 thousand hectares of land plots were excluded from agricultural circulation and classified as radioactively dangerous lands.
Scientists believe that the Chernobyl zone will only become completely safe after 10 thousand years, although the background radiation in the contaminated zone will significantly improve after 300 years, when strontium-90 and cesium-137 undergo half-life decay.
