Melania Trump got into beekeeping and is expanding the White House apiary
First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump, announced the expansion of the White House beekeeping program. A new beehive, handcrafted by a local artisan in the shape of the White House itself, was installed on the South Lawn of the US President's residence.

Thanks to the new beehive, two more bee colonies will join those already working and producing the White House's signature honey.
It is expected that this will increase the annual honey production at this apiary by approximately 30 pounds (about 13.6 kilograms). This will allow more frequent use of their own honey in the White House kitchen, as well as for official gifts from the President and First Lady. Part of the produce is also planned to be donated to local soup kitchens.
In addition, the new bees will help to better pollinate the White House gardens, flowerbeds, and plants on the National Mall.
The official White House beekeeping program began in 2009, during Barack Obama's presidency, when residence carpenter Charlie Brandt took it up as a hobby.
During the summer season, the number of bees in the two existing hives can reach 70,000 individuals. In a good year, they yield about 200-225 pounds of honey (about 90-102 kilograms). With the new beehive, volumes could increase to 230-255 pounds (about 104-116 kilograms) or even more.
White House honey is known for its light clover and linden flavor with a barely noticeable citrus hint. It is used for tea, salad dressings, and desserts.
The project is funded through the National Mall and Memorial Parks Foundation, and is overseen by the White House's chief gardener, Dale Haney.
