"What are they doing?" Brest residents in shock over landscape transformations in the citadel

First and foremost, locals are worried about the preservation of trees, fearing that at the current rate of felling, soon there will be nothing left of the unique green mass except splinters.

The greenery of the Brest Fortress is suffering greatly from the transformations. This year alone, several thousand units of vegetation have been destroyed on the territory. And work continues here.

Not long ago, these ramparts were densely covered with trees and bushes. Now, almost nothing remains of that landscape. Maryia Nistratava admits: the deeper into the forest, the more indignation," says the correspondent.

— After one such walk, I was, to put it mildly, simply shocked by what I saw. And with each step, it literally became more difficult for me. Because of the huge number of felled trees. Moreover, these were not only young trees but also adult ones, which were clearly decades old. And the scale of what is happening is simply astounding. At some point, I really wanted to cry, because I am against such felling, — said Maryia Nistratava, a resident of Brest.

And the owners of plots near the Brest Fortress are primarily concerned about the fauna:

— The thing is, ducks walk around, and foxes run, and hares, and roe deer. Where will they be, I don't know where they will go now, — worries the woman.

Yes, owlets of the tawny owl were found under the felled trees. One of them died, the other was saved. The chick came into the hands of Dzmitry Awdzeyew, head of a private center for bird and animal rescue. The owlet, Kuzia, was in poor condition, but was "put back on its feet" in two weeks.

— It gradually started eating on its own. We give it food with tweezers, and it completely swallows a mouse, — says Dzmitry Awdzeyew.

Local utility workers, however, say that everything is normal, well thought out, and will be very good later. Landscape transformation, according to them, is a forced measure. The area around the Brest Fortress had become overgrown. And only invasive plants, deadwood, and emergency trees were put under the knife.

— These are plants that had no value. These are invasive plants. In particular, ash-leaved maples. These are acacias that grew in this area. Poplars that have lost some aesthetic and actual properties here over time, — assures Andrey Hashaw, General Director of KUMP "Brest City Housing and Utility Services".
