Germany's flagship airline Lufthansa will cancel 20,000 flights from June to October 2026 to save aviation fuel amid the energy crisis caused by the US and Israel's war with Iran, writes Deutsche Welle.
Lufthansa representatives believe that cancelling these flights will save more than 40,000 tons of fuel. At the same time, the airline's efficiency, measured in available passenger-kilometers (this indicator equals the number of available seats multiplied by the number of kilometers traveled by the vehicle), will decrease by less than one percentage point. This, Lufthansa claims, will be achieved by reducing short-haul "unprofitable routes" from Frankfurt am Main and Munich while simultaneously expanding existing flights from Zurich, Vienna, and Brussels. The changes will also affect the company's sixth hub — in Rome.
Lufthansa promised to name the flights that will not operate from June to October by the end of April. However, the company is already implementing cancellations for flights scheduled up to May 31.
For example, on April 20, Lufthansa cancelled the first 120 daily flights. Flights from Frankfurt am Main to Bydgoszcz and Rzeszów in Poland, as well as to Stavanger in Norway, have been temporarily suspended.
