The guy was sober.

A 20-year-old Minsk resident contacted the Pervomaisky District Department of Internal Affairs in Minsk. He reported that he was at home and heard an unfamiliar male voice coming from his laptop. Attempts to restart the computer were unsuccessful, reports "Minsk Police".
After that, a countdown started on the screen, and a threat appeared to disable the device if the Minsk resident did not follow a link in the messenger.
Following the instructions, the man was told to register on a crypto exchange and grant access to his account. He refused to comply with the demands and contacted the police.
Employees of the cybercrime countermeasures unit found that the applicant had downloaded an extension for a popular online game and, as a result, installed at least six malicious programs designed to collect personal data, including logins and passwords.
As well as — applications for hidden system access, screen broadcasting, webcam and microphone control, and full control over the device.
As a result of the cyberattack, the laptop, valued at about 5000 rubles, has been rendered inoperable and is beyond repair.
