72-year-old American actor John Travolta unexpectedly received an honorary "Golden Palm" at the Cannes Film Festival. The award was presented to him by the festival's artistic director, Thierry Frémaux, before the premiere of Travolta's directorial debut film, "The Propeller: A One-Way Night Flight."

The actor was visibly moved — he couldn't hold back tears and admitted that he hadn't expected such recognition at all.
Travolta noted that this evening was a real surprise for him, and Frémaux replied that the organizers had planned such an unexpected moment in advance.
This year, the actor came to Cannes to present his first film as a director. According to him, it is the most personal work in his career. The film tells the story of a boy and his mother's journey to Hollywood during the golden age of aviation. The actor's daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta, also starred in the film.
The festival organizers previously announced that honorary awards would also be given to director Peter Jackson and singer-actress Barbra Streisand. But it has become a tradition in Cannes to present another unexpected "palm" — last year, Denzel Washington received it.
Travolta's film will be released on the Apple TV platform on May 29.
Travolta previously screened the films "Pulp Fiction" (1994), "She's So Lovely" (1997), and "Primary Colors" (1998) at the Cannes Film Festival. At that time, he participated as an actor.
