Bus Driver Tried to Smuggle Collection of Old Banknotes from Belarus to Poland
A 37-year-old citizen of Belarus will be brought to administrative responsibility for attempting to illegally export a large collection of antique banknotes from the country. The violation was discovered by Brest customs officers at the "Brest" border crossing point, the State Customs Committee writes .
The man was traveling to Poland as a driver of a regular bus service on the Brest — Warsaw route. During a verbal inquiry, he stated that he had no goods with him that needed to be declared.
However, during a search of his personal belongings, customs officers found a cardboard box in his backpack containing 138 state credit notes of various denominations and years of issue.
According to the customs expert's conclusion, 136 banknotes are considered cultural valuables, as they were created more than a hundred years ago. The total value of the collection is estimated at approximately 1.6 thousand rubles.
An administrative process has been initiated against the man under Part 1 of Article 15.5 of the Code of the Republic of Belarus on Administrative Offenses.
Customs authorities remind that all cultural valuables are subject to mandatory customs declaration when leaving Belarus. For their legal export, it is necessary to obtain permission from the Ministry of Culture, confirming that the movement of these items will not harm the country's historical and cultural heritage.
