On August 11, Polish border guards detained a 35-year-old Belarusian who was entering Poland from Germany in a van with 24 bicycles. A check revealed that at least seven of them had been stolen in Germany. The origin of the remaining bicycles is still being determined, writes Most media outlet.
The van was stopped by Border Guard officers in Słubice during temporarily reinstated controls at the entry to Poland. The cargo compartment contained bicycles of various brands, which aroused the suspicion of the border guards.
After a check, the German side confirmed that seven of the bicycles had previously been reported as stolen in Germany. An additional check is being conducted on the remaining 17 bicycles.
The total value of the confiscated bicycles was estimated at approximately 60,000 Polish Złoty (about 16,300 US dollars).
The Belarusian was detained. He may be charged with handling property obtained through criminal means.
In addition, Polish authorities have initiated administrative proceedings for his mandatory return to his country of origin. This could lead to the Belarusian's deportation from Poland.
The detainee was handed over to the police in Słubice, who will continue the investigation and ascertain the origin of the bicycles.
