President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Rustem Umerov will be appointed head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine. Prior to this, he held the position of Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council.
According to Zelenskyy, in his new position, Umerov will continue to coordinate international cooperation in the military sphere, including within the Drone Deals program. This format envisages long-term financing of the Ukrainian defense industry by partner countries, which in return gain access to modern defense developments.
As the president noted, agreements under Drone Deals have already been concluded with nine countries, and negotiations are underway with fifteen others.
Zelenskyy also reported that Umerov will continue to engage in negotiations with the United States and other partners, and will also participate in the negotiation process concerning the cessation of the Russian-Ukrainian war. According to him, the appointment to head foreign intelligence will give Umerov more opportunities to work at the intersection of diplomacy, security, and defense.
During his tenure as Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Umerov already participated in negotiations between Ukraine, the USA, and Russia. In July, it was reported that he held meetings with Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, for two days.
Ihor Klymenko will become the new Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council. According to Zelenskyy, his experience leading the Ministry of Internal Affairs and coordinating the activities of security agencies will help strengthen the interaction of the National Security and Defense Council with the government, especially on issues of the country's resilience in wartime conditions.
