Near Voronezh, Belarusian Man Entered Stranger's Apartment, Declared Counter-Terrorist Operation, and Took Money
Recidivist Vasil Karlošov claimed that he repented the very next day and wanted to return the money, but somehow it didn't work out.
Vasil Karlošov, a native of Belarus, was tried in the Voronezh region for fraud, but received a suspended sentence.
In August 2024, Karlošov helped an unfamiliar young man open a water tap in a rented apartment in the village of Novaya Usman — Russia's largest village, located in the Voronezh region, with a population of over 36,000 people.
During their conversation, it turned out that the man had arrived from another region and was renting accommodation on a daily basis. It was then that the Belarusian devised a scheme to get hold of his new acquaintance's money.
Two days later, he went to the young man, who by that time had already moved to another apartment on the 10th floor of the same building. Karlošov introduced himself as an employee of the Federal Service for Drug Control, stating that a counter-terrorist operation regime was in effect in Voronezh and that visitors were required to register within 24 hours, which the victim had not done. To "avoid responsibility," he offered to settle for approximately $150. The frightened man transferred the money via a banking application.
The Belarusian claimed that the next day he returned to the victim to give the money back, but the door was not opened for him — the victim had already called the police. Learning that he was being sought, Karlošov himself went to the police station, wrote a confession, and fully admitted his guilt.
Karlošov had a criminal history even before this. In the mid-2010s, he was tried under a drug-related article in Russia's Kursk region and was sentenced to six years. He requested extradition and served the remainder of his term in penal colony No. 8 in Orsha. Given that he was placed in a colony for recidivists in Belarus, it suggests that this was not his first offense in his home country either.
However, the Russian court treated Karlošov leniently this time, taking into account his full admission of guilt and the fact that he returned the money. Moreover, the victim had no claims against him. The Belarusian was given a suspended sentence of 1 year and 8 months.
