Missing Cat Found in Britain a Year Later, 160 Kilometers From Home in an Animal Shelter
In the UK, a ginger cat named Ginger was found almost a year after his disappearance. He ended up in a shelter for homeless cats in Garforth, approximately 160 kilometers from his home, writes the BBC.
Lucy Roche, a volunteer for Cat Action Trust 1977 who looks after cat colonies in Leeds, noticed that one of the ginger cats looked domestic. She carefully caught him and took him to the vet.
There, with the help of a microchip, it was possible to identify the animal and find its owner, who lived in Sunderland. When Lucy called the woman with the good news, she, according to the volunteer, couldn't hold back tears and couldn't believe the cat had been found.
Until the owners arrived, Lucy took Ginger home with her. The cat was very exhausted: he cuddled with the volunteer and slept for a long time on the sofa.
The next day, he finally met his owner, Beth.
A video of their emotional reunion quickly spread on social media, and the cat's story became known beyond the UK. Lucy said that messages about Ginger came even from the USA and New Zealand.
The volunteer noted that finding the owners was possible precisely thanks to the microchip. In England, cat microchipping became mandatory in 2024.
The organization Lucy works for helps colonies of homeless cats: providing them with food, water, and shelter, and also treating and sterilizing animals when necessary. If a colony's location is dangerous, the cats are rehomed to new owners or farms.
