Bosnia Recalls Almost All Embassy Staff from Serbia

Bosnia and Herzegovina's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elmedin Konaković, announced that relations with Serbia would be reduced to a minimum. The reason was the honoring in Belgrade of Ratko Mladić, a war criminal convicted of genocide.

All staff will be recalled from the embassy in Belgrade, except for the ambassador and consul: only the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina can appoint and recall them. Consular duties will be transferred to embassy staff in Zagreb and Podgorica.

Numerous officials from Serbia and the Serbian part of Bosnia and Herzegovina attended Mladić's funeral. Konaković called the banner "Course for Potočari" during a match of the Serbian club "Crvena Zvezda" (Red Star) the final straw. Potočari is home to the memorial for the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, for the organization of which Mladić was sentenced to life imprisonment.

“If I could, I would sever diplomatic relations with Serbia today. But I will do everything I can to minimize them,” Konaković stated.
