AI generation in video games was criticized, and now it's admired. Leaked NVIDIA technology turns old games into true cinematography

In spring, NVIDIA's new neural rendering sparked outrage among players, but a recent DLSS 5 leak changed opinions. Enthusiasts were able to transform old games into photorealistic cinema, however, due to strict hardware requirements, this digital marvel will remain an exclusive only for owners of flagship graphics cards.

Image scaling technologies long remained exclusively utilitarian tools. DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) is an NVIDIA-developed technology that uses artificial intelligence to enhance image recognition in real-time. The graphics card renders the game in low quality, and the neural network instantly "fills in" details to high quality. Previous versions of DLSS worked with one goal — to reduce the load on hardware and increase frame rates by creating additional pixels or entire intermediate frames.

Everything changed in March 2026, when NVIDIA presented DLSS 5. The corporation announced a transition to 3D-guided neural network rendering.

Instead of simply improving performance, artificial intelligence began to independently synthesize photorealistic lighting, shadows, and material textures, distinguishing skin from metal, and hair from water.

The initial public reaction was catastrophic. The technology demonstration, using the game Resident Evil Requiem as an example, caused widespread outrage among gamers. The neural network altered the facial features of the heroine, Grace Ashcroft, adding deep wrinkles and distinct makeup. NVIDIA's official video garnered 84% dislikes, and social media erupted with accusations of creating "AI slop." Players and developers were indignant that the algorithm was destroying the original artistic intent, turning unique characters into standardized avatars from mobile applications.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang was forced to defend the technology, stating that critics were mistaken. According to him, DLSS 5 does not change geometry and leaves full artistic control in the hands of developers through a system of sliders that regulate intensity and tone. But trust was undermined, and even the authoritative publication Digital Foundry faced threats for its cautiously positive review of the technology.

"True magic"

The situation changed dramatically in late August when a code library from the beta version of the basketball simulator NBA 2K27 leaked online. The 158-megabyte file fell into the hands of enthusiasts from the RenoDX community, who managed to integrate it into games that never had official support for the new technology.

The results shocked even the most ardent skeptics. When the model was applied to projects like Control, Cyberpunk 2077, Skyrim, and GTA San Andreas, players saw not a "plastic filter," but a cinematic picture.

The neural network correctly added micro-relief to clothing, created volumetric shadows on faces, and revitalized old textures in such a way that scenes began to resemble live video footage. The tone of online comments instantly changed: players started calling it "true magic" and an "insanely huge graphical update."

Recognition also came from the game creators themselves. Warhorse Studios Creative Director Daniel Vávra admitted that DLSS 5 finally allowed the final image of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 to approach the ideal that artists envisioned on their workstations. Artificial intelligence was able to flawlessly render shadows from hats, buckles, and laces — something the classic game engine couldn't handle for years.

Technology only for the wealthy

However, the cinematic look comes at a high price. Officially, DLSS 5 works exclusively on the new generation of RTX 50 graphics cards (Blackwell architecture). Modders managed to bypass the limitations and run the technology on the previous RTX 40 line, but owners of older chips were disappointed. When attempting to launch neural rendering on RTX 30 series (Ampere) graphics cards, the frame rate plummeted from 130 to 4 FPS. The reason lies in the physical absence of hardware support for FP8 format computations. Moreover, even on top modern cards, enabling the new technology consumes 50% to 60% of performance.

The photorealistic future of video games has indeed arrived, but for the vast majority of gamers, it will remain accessible only in the form of YouTube videos for now. NVIDIA's new revolution requires significant financial investment in computer upgrades, turning DLSS 5 into an exclusive tool for owners of flagship systems.
