Gunfire was reported from several districts of Niamey. The country's authorities have not yet confirmed the coup attempt but called on residents to remain calm and announced an increase in security forces in the capital.

The military junta has been in power in Niger since 2023. It particularly relies on Russia's support. Government troops continue combat operations against jihadist groups linked to "Islamic State" and "Al-Qaeda" organizations.

The analytical resource Casus Belli suggests that the reason for the current rebellion could be the dissatisfaction of soldiers participating in battles due to delays in salary payments. Recently, there have been reports of significant losses suffered by the Nigerien army.

According to some reports, the airport is currently controlled by the rebels, while the presidential palace is held by forces loyal to the military junta.
