Donald Trump has appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as Special Envoy for Greenland.

The US President has appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as Special Envoy for Greenland. The head of the White House announced this on his social network Truth Social.
Landry himself noted that it is a great honor for him "to make Greenland a part of the USA."
The White House did not explain why Trump appointed the 54-year-old Republican, who became Governor of Louisiana in 2024, to this position.
The administrative centers of Louisiana, which is almost the southernmost mainland state, and Greenland are separated by about 4600 km by air; however, the governors of geographically closer northern states are predominantly representatives of the Democratic Party.
Traditionally, the White House appoints special envoys during international crises and complex negotiations, writes Deutsche Welle.
Earlier, Danish media reported that the US administration is trying to establish direct contacts with the authorities of Greenland, bypassing the Danish government, and is conducting "covert influence operations" on the island.
The Danish authorities call any attempts of foreign interference in relations between Copenhagen and Greenland unacceptable. They have not yet commented on the appointment of Jeff Landry as US Special Envoy for Greenland.
