In the Rogachev district in September 2011, heating equipment was stolen from one of the houses. The perpetrator could not be found immediately. However, certain clues remained.

At the crime scene, forensic experts seized a cigarette butt. This item became the subject of a forensic genetic examination.
During the study of DNA extracted from the cigarette butt filter, a male genotype was established, and characteristics suitable for genetic identification were found. Due to the absence of a suspect, the genotype was placed in a database.
They returned to it only in November 2025. Rogachev District Department of Internal Affairs officers detained a man on suspicion of committing a crime. The perpetrator actually drew attention to himself, which led to the examination, reports the State Forensic Examination Committee.
The established genotype matched the genotype extracted more than 10 years ago from the same cigarette butt.
