Trump stated that Iran requested negotiations with the U.S. amid a harsh crackdown on protests. But, Trump says, the U.S. might have to intervene sooner.

Iran appears to be crossing a red line by harshly suppressing protests, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. His words were published by the White House pool.
"They started, it looks like, [crossing the red line]. It seems like people were killed who shouldn't have been killed. They are brutal [in the Iranian leadership] — you can call them leaders, I don't know if you can call them leaders. I think they govern with violence. But we take this very seriously, the military does too. And there are several options," Trump said.
According to him, the Iranian leadership has invited talks with the U.S.
"Perhaps we will have to act before a meeting. <...> A meeting is in the process of being arranged. Iran called. They want to negotiate," he says.
According to Axios, the American human rights organization HRANA confirmed the deaths of more than 544 people in the last two weeks and the arrest of more than 10,000 people during protests across Iran.
Axios writes that the first meetings have been held within the American administration to discuss ways to support the protests. Among the options are "U.S. military strikes against Iranian regime targets," as well as cyberattacks and information operations against Tehran.
Iranian officials, in response, promised that Tehran would attack U.S. military bases in the region if Trump ordered an attack.
