In the Philippines, a woman prayed to Shrek instead of Buddha for four years

The woman bought the figurine in a shop in the Philippine capital, Manila, and placed it prominently on her home altar. Daily she lit incense before it and prayed, hoping to receive blessings.
The Filipina's mistake was noticed by her guest, who pointed out that its color and facial features differed greatly from the usual depictions of Buddha.

After discovering the truth, however, the woman was neither upset nor ashamed. She noted that the sincerity of prayer is what matters, not the figurine itself, and therefore plans to continue worshipping it.
This story sparked a wave of jokes on social media. Users commented that sincere devotion is more important than the statue's appearance, and also that elements of local traditions have long been incorporated into Buddhism, so unexpected forms of worship are not surprising.
