Putin admitted to Whitkoff and Kushner that he is comfortable working with them
During a meeting on September 5 with special representatives of the US President Steve Whitkoff and Jared Kushner, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia had received a proposal from Ukraine through official channels – special services and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – to temporarily cease strikes for the duration of the American delegation's visit, writes The Moscow Times.
According to Putin, after this, he ordered Russian troops to cease attacks on Kyiv. The Russian President claims that no strikes were carried out on the Ukrainian capital from midnight on September 5. He also stated that Ukraine, in turn, significantly reduced the intensity of attacks on Russian regions, including Moscow.
Putin promised to do everything necessary for the safety of the American representatives and the negotiation process. He thanked US President Donald Trump for his attempts to stop the war and asked Whitkoff and Kushner to convey his best wishes and words of gratitude.
The Russian president also stated that Moscow is comfortable working with the American negotiators and that the level of trust in them from Russia is high. He emphasized that the quality of mediation and trust in the people involved in negotiations are of great importance.
At the same time, Putin noted that Russia had not concluded an agreement with Ukraine on a broader three-day truce. According to him, the Ukrainian authorities publicly called for a three-day ceasefire, but there was no direct agreement between the parties on this.
The Russian President said this after Whitkoff expressed his gratitude for precisely this three-day truce.
Whitkoff and Kushner arrived in Moscow on September 5 for negotiations on a possible peaceful settlement of the war in Ukraine. After meetings in Russia, they are expected to travel to Kyiv. Earlier, Donald Trump stated that his special representatives would bring a proposal for an end to the war.
At the same time, the Russian leadership's expectations from the visit of the American negotiators, according to Bloomberg agency, remain very low.
The visit of Whitkoff and Kushner was preceded by mutual calls for a temporary cessation of attacks. On the evening of September 4, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed that Moscow refrain from strikes during consultations with American representatives. However, on the night of September 5, Russian troops launched a massive strike on Ukraine, including the Kyiv airports Zhuliany and Boryspil. Zelenskyy called this attack targeted and linked it to the preparation of the American delegation's visit.
