Belarusians shocked by schoolchildren from Karma — they didn't translate a single Belarusian word

On the eve of International Mother Language Day, the official resource of the Karma District Executive Committee posted a video on social networks, in which it unwittingly disgraced local schoolchildren. Or more precisely — the education system, in which the teaching of the Belarusian language has been minimized to the level of a foreign language. But it turned out that children know even that language better than their native one.

The district newspaper, which is published entirely in Russian, held a "language quiz" and asked students of Secondary School No. 1 in the urban settlement of Karma in the Gomel region to translate Belarusian words into Russian. None of the surveyed children gave a correct answer, noted "Flagstock".

The words offered for translation were: skyscraper, carpet, little horse, fence, teapot, socks, veil, and staff.

The video went viral on Threads, where the Belarusian language is currently trending.

The audience was shocked:

"Did they intentionally make such a joke video? It's incomprehensible. I forget Russian words because I prefer Belarusian in communication, and here they couldn't translate a few Belarusian words. It's upsetting. Is this how the Belarusian language is studied in Belarus now?"

"Not a joke, but a horror."

"It makes one want to cry."

"Painful to watch."

"Belarus will soon become Russia. Putin has won."

"My God, how... un-Belarusian they are. Yet, behind them is something... red-green, heart-shaped, and a portrait of Lermontov. Not Kupala, not Bahdanovich, and not Bykau. A completely pro-Russian upbringing within the Russian information space. Children raised and taught this way will easily allow a Mogilev or any other 'people's republic,' because their minds are devoid of their own culture, their heads are already occupied by Russianness."

In response to a comment that the education system is underperforming, another user expressed the opinion that it actually works exactly as it needs to: "We teach foreign languages, to which, unfortunately, our native language will soon join."

But there is also a positive example, which was shown in another district — though not by children, but by adults.

The newspaper of the Loev District Executive Committee published a video, timed to the Ministry of Trade's campaign "Every Friday — Native, Our Own", in which district hospital employees talked about their favorite Belarusian goods in their native language. It turned out that almost all surveyed medical workers speak Belarusian practically without mistakes.
