"Mountains are growing, we'll have to breathe this later." Residents of a high-rise building in Loshitsa are unhappy with their "snowy neighbor"

And when the snow started falling, it turned out that one of the "reservoirs" is located in Loshitsa, at the intersection of Chyzheuskikh and Maniuszki streets. This area once had a dense private sector, and in the future, multi-apartment buildings will appear here. For now, however, mountains of snow continue to grow, writes Onliner.by.

— The snow storage site is located about 500 meters from my house, — says Aliaksei, who lives in Loshitsa. — In essence, it's a dump for snow-salt masses that are removed after street cleaning. And for us, residents of nearby high-rise buildings, such a neighborhood causes serious concerns.

We believe that in spring, when the snow starts to melt and dry out, the same salt (dust) that was used to sprinkle the roads will remain on the site. The wind can scatter it in all directions, including towards us, to the high-rise buildings where families with children live. White residue, irritating smell, a feeling of dustiness — what should we expect? And what about asthmatics/allergics? Will this dust irritate eyes and throat?

Onliner contacted the administration of the Lenin District for comment.

"For the purpose of prompt cleaning, removal, and storage of large amounts of snow from the territory of the Lenin District of Minsk for the winter period of 2025-2026, the administration of the Lenin District of Minsk, by decision No. 70 "On Snow Storage" dated 19.01.2026, approved the placement of a snow storage site near Chyzheuskikh St., S. Maniuszki St.

In accordance with paragraph 28 of the Rules for the Improvement and Maintenance of the City of Minsk, approved by the decision of the Minsk City Council of Deputies dated 16.11.2016 No. 252, the list, layout schemes, and arrangements of snow storage sites are determined by specialized organizations for the maintenance of the street and road network and coordinated with the district administrations of the city.

Requirements for the selection of a land plot for the placement of snow storage sites, their arrangement and operation, land reclamation after decommissioning to prevent or ensure minimal impact of snow storage on the natural environment are established by TKP 17.02-16—2018 "Environmental Protection and Nature Management. Requirements for the placement and operation of snow storage sites," approved by the Resolution of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus dated 05.10.2018 No. 4-T.

The selection of locations for snow storage sites is carried out taking into account the results of territory surveys for potential environmental pollution by the snow storage site, considering the optimal distance from snow removal locations, routes of mechanical vehicles for snow removal, and the time required for such work.

Snow storage sites are located no closer than 100 m from residential buildings, children's and medical institutions (inpatient facilities).

The processing of the district's street and road network with anti-icing materials is carried out in compliance with STB 1158-2013 "Anti-icing materials for winter maintenance of motor roads," approved by the Resolution of the State Committee for Standardization of the Republic of Belarus dated 27.11.2013 No. 61, which regulates the standards for the use of anti-icing materials to eliminate winter slipperiness, thereby preventing the exceedance of pollutant concentrations in the air during snow melting, as well as in the composition of meltwaters discharged from the snow storage site.

Local residents, who also sent an appeal to the local authorities, were assured that when a favorable period arrives, the territory will be recultivated in accordance with all norms and rules.
