El Mencho, one of the world's most dangerous drug lords, killed in Mexico

For decades, he hid under the protection of his militants. Now, his cartel is causing unrest on the streets of Mexico.

In Mexico, El Mencho, one of the world's most dangerous drug lords, was killed. This was reported by El País.

Rubén Nemesio Oseguera (El Mencho) is the leader of the CJNG ("Jalisco New Generation") cartel. The drug lord was eliminated by Mexican military personnel.

El Mencho was killed in the mountains of Jalisco. For decades, he had been hiding under the protection of his militants.

During the operation, four cartel members died on the spot, and three suffered serious injuries and died during air transport to Mexico City. El Mencho was among the latter three. Authorities also confiscated various weapons, including "rocket launchers capable of shooting down planes and destroying armored vehicles."

This event is compared in scale to the capture of El Mayo and El Chapo, who are incarcerated in U.S. prisons.

After El Mencho's death, the cartel began blocking roads and setting cars on fire across the country. The drug lord's death puts Mexico in a situation of uncertainty, given the criminal groups' propensity for internal wars.

The elimination of El Mencho, who was a priority target for the U.S. as well, became the strongest blow to drug trafficking in the country's recent history. Donald Trump's administration offered up to $15 million for information that would help in the drug lord's apprehension.

El Mencho was the last of a generation of drug traffickers who, like El Chapo and El Mayo, began their journey in the last century, when the PRI party completely dominated Mexico and crime was subordinate to official authority. Over the years, old alliances disappeared, groups fragmented, and created powerful armies, utilizing the flow of weapons from the U.S.

Now, none of them remain at large.
