The leader of the British right-wing populist party Reform UK, Nigel Farage, won the by-election in the Clacton constituency but refused to attend the announcement of the results, writes The Huffington Post.

Farage received 22,239 votes, beating his main rival, Count Binface (Count Face — Dustbin, or Trash-faced) — a satirical character created by comedian Jon Harvey, who received 9,455 votes. Voter turnout was 44.37%.

The official announcement of Farage's victory at the Clacton leisure center was met mostly with silence. Farage himself and most members of his party did not attend the results announcement ceremony. Reform UK also canceled Farage's scheduled Friday morning speech in Clacton without explanation.

Overnight, Farage had already declared his decisive victory, stating that voters had "shown a middle finger" to the political establishment, writes the BBC.

Count Binface, who is played by comedian Jon Harvey, is a warrior from the planet Sigma IX. In public, he appears in a black and gray uniform, a long cloak, and a helmet in the shape of a dustbin. For almost ten years, he has regularly stood in the same constituencies as leading British politicians. For example, in 2017, he opposed Prime Minister Theresa May in her home constituency of Maidenhead, and also ran in the same constituency as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The by-election was called because Farage, who represented the constituency in the lower house of the British Parliament, announced on July 7 that he was stepping down prematurely. However, he immediately made it clear that he would run for the seat again.

Also participating in the elections were three candidates from the Official Monster Raving Loony Party and actor Laurence Fox.

Harvey uses the image of Count Binface not only to mock British politics and its stuffy traditions but also to stimulate discussions about democracy and encourage voter participation.

In the Clacton by-election, he participated to try and prevent the popular populist Nigel Farage from entering parliament.
