Political prisoner Alena Pankova has died. Six months ago, she was convicted for participating in protests
Alena is survived by her 18-year-old son.

Alena Pankova passed away in February 2026. "Lena died suddenly: there was a person — and now there isn't. It's very scary," says a family friend.
In the summer of 2025, Pankova was convicted under Article 342 of the Criminal Code (actions grossly violating public order) – this is how participation in protest marches was classified. The security forces jumped on the last train – a couple more months, and the statute of limitations would have expired.
But they managed to convict her in the Oktyabrsky District Court of Minsk.
Alena was a geographer by education. She loved animals, travels, and hikes, and was fond of knitting.Alena was given "home arrest" (a form of correctional labor). This meant she had a strict daily schedule – from home to work and back. We do not know the cause of Alena's death, nor is it clear if she complained about her health. However, for those on home arrest, going to the doctor is a major logistical problem; they have to manage it within that "free" hour after work. Or they have to write an application in advance and get permission from their inspector.
According to BelPol, the woman is survived by her 18-year-old son.
