Belarusian volunteer Gerard to remain in custody in Ukraine for at least another month
Belarusian volunteer Aliaksandr Krasoŭski, with the call sign "Gerard," who was detained in Kharkiv in March this year, will remain in custody until at least August 10. Concurrently, the court extended the pre-trial investigation period – investigators will now handle the case until August 14, "Radio Svaboda" reported .
The consideration of extending the arrest and investigation periods was postponed for several days, as Krasoŭski and his lawyer petitioned for the recusal of the judge. They claimed that she might be biased because she had previously made decisions regarding the seizure of funds confiscated during the search. However, another judge found no grounds for recusal.
During the court hearings, Krasoŭski did not admit his guilt, and his defense stated that the investigation had not provided sufficient evidence. Despite this, the court granted the investigation's petitions and kept the volunteer in custody at the Kharkiv pre-trial detention center.
Aliaksandr Krasoŭski was detained on March 14. He is suspected of unauthorized abandonment of a military unit and illegal handling of weapons and ammunition. He also had 1.4 million euros with him.
A criminal case was initiated back in January, after which secret investigative actions were carried out for almost two months.
Krasoŭski is a native of Minsk. After the start of the war, he fought as part of the Kastuś Kalinoŭski Regiment, and later in the "Tur" unit of the 225th Separate Assault Battalion. He also participated in the operation in the Kursk region.
The volunteer has state awards of Ukraine, including the full set of the Order "For Courage," as well as other honors for participation in combat operations. Together with his wife, who serves in the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, he raises a daughter with a disability.
