According to the French president, the de facto closure of sea routes is already affecting the global economy. To guarantee the safety of maritime transport, the European Union's "Aspides" naval mission is planned to be deployed, and this mission will be "purely defensive".
Operation Aspides was launched by the European Union in February 2024 to protect commercial vessels from attacks in the Red Sea, the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, and the Persian Gulf. Its main objectives are to escort vessels and guarantee navigation safety.
France's own deployment in the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, and Strait of Hormuz will include eight frigates, one aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle," and two amphibious helicopter carriers.
