German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized the US decision to temporarily ease sanctions against Russian oil, adopted amidst rising global prices due to the war in the Middle East, Bild reports.
During a meeting with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Canadian government head Mark Carney, he stated that most G7 countries opposed such a step and considered it mistaken.
According to Merz, during a video conference of G7 leaders, six countries supported maintaining pressure on Moscow, but Washington made a different decision. The Canadian Prime Minister also emphasized that Ottawa intends to continue its sanctions policy, including restrictions against the so-called "shadow fleet" used for transporting Russian oil.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that easing sanctions could increase Russia's raw material export revenues and thereby intensify the threat to Ukraine. According to him, allies expected coordinated actions, but the US made the decision independently to lower oil prices amidst the military conflict with Iran.
