Former political prisoner and journalist of the presidential pool Dmitry Semchenko, in a new episode of TOK, explained why he exchanged a reporter's freedom for work in the pool of the only untouchable person in the country.

Journalist Dmitry Semchenko from Mogilev worked for the ONT TV channel from 2009 to 2020. From 2014, he was part of Lukashenka's journalistic pool.
On August 13, 2020, Dmitry resigned from ONT, and in September he was punished with administrative arrest for participating in a protest march.
At the end of 2022, Semchenko was detained again, and after two 15-day terms, he was charged under Article 130 of the Criminal Code (inciting hatred).
In March 2023, Dmitry was sentenced to three years in prison. He was released in July 2025, having fully served his term. Two months later, he left the country with his wife.

Recalling his transition to Lukashenka's pool, Semchenko reminds that it happened in 2014 after Russia's occupation of Crimea and parts of Donbas:
«Russia begins to devour its territories, which they believe belonged to this empire. And I understood that this was a historical time when Russia could devour us altogether».
As the journalist argues, at that moment he saw Lukashenka not as «just some patriot», but as a person whose power effectively guaranteed the sovereignty of Belarus:
«His own seat became, as it were, a synonym for sovereignty. Because he does not give up his seat, he does not give his power to Russia and will not give it up. I understood that he would now fight for his seat. And if Russia cannot devour us during this historical period, we will have a chance to build a national foundation».
«I join the pool at that moment — to fight Russia. (…) Yes, this is a certain career advancement. That's true. (…) But when I was asked: «Why will you work there now?», — I said, because Russia should not devour us at that moment», — notes Dmitry and assures that at that time he was considered a fervent nationalist on the channel.
Semchenko reminds that Lukashenka himself did not recognize Donbas and the occupation of Crimea, and went to Poroshenko's inauguration. Before that, South Ossetia and Abkhazia had not been recognized. And in Vitebsk in 2014, a monument to Algirdas was erected.
«At that moment, there were many nationally oriented people in the system who wanted to use this historical period to strengthen the national foundation. (…) There were people, so-called Russkiy Mir adherents, at that moment, who wanted Russia to finally devour us», — notes Dmitry.
Semchenko describes that period as relatively open and even promising.
«I can cover certain things, and I can say in these stories that it's good, one should do it this way. Business liberalization — good. Establishing some ties with the European Union — good. That we are also Europe — good. That we are an independent country — good».

Лукашэнкаўская "стабільнасць" - гэта ледзь не калька з брэжнеўскага "застою", аб якім саўкі ўзгадваюць з настальгіяй, забываючыся аб шматлікіх грандыёзных эканамічных праблемах тых часоў. Хіба што "застой" трымаўся на выбухнуўшых коштах на нафту, а "стабільнасць" - на расейскіх датацыях. І калі кошты на нафту здуліся - неўзабаве скончыліся і застой, і СССР. І няма ніводнай краіны альбо міжнароднай інстытуцыі, якая пагадзілася б істотна замяніць расейскую падтрымку Беларусі без палітычна непрымальных для ўлады Лукашэнкі рэформ.
Спадар Семчанка фармулюе настолькі універсальную адмазку, што калі ў Расеі адбудзецца нешта фатальнае, то ўсё дзейныя лукашысты пачнуць апраўдвацца аднолькава - мы былі з Лукашэнкай, каб супрацьстаяць Расеі і захаваць незалежную Беларусь. Нават Карпянкоў і Азаронак. А калі ў іх спытаюцца - а навошта вы вынішчалі беларускую мову, беларушчыну і БЧБ-сцяг, жорстка рэпрэсавалі нязгодных, прасоўвалі "расейскі свет", сустракалі расейскіх агрэсараў з хлебам-соллю, гераізавалі вайсковых злачынцаў з Вагнера і зараблялі на крыві ўкраінцаў, то яны адкажуць таксама аднолькава: гэткім чынам мы майстарскі манеўравалі перад Расеяй, каб перадухіліць адзінамомантавую анэксію. А пакуль ў Расеі нічога не адбываецца - то яны з энтузіязмам будуць працягваць рабіць сваю брудную справу, будаваць кар'еры ў сістэме Лукашэнкі і зарабляць грошы, ні кроплі не турбуючыся аб скрадзенай і знішчанай Лукашэнкай і імі будучыні Беларусі. Азнаёмцеся з дакладам спадара Крука - там сапраўды жахлівыя высновы.
Людзі спрабуюць стварыць цэльны паслядоўны вобраз сваёй асобы і сваёй дзейнасці, а ён не абавязкова існуе. Быў іншы час, іншыя матывы, крытэрыі. Так, маглі і кар'еру рабіць, а маральны выбар не выглядаў для іх настолькі відавочным, як зараз.
Гэта не крытыка пра "пераабуліся". У 2020-м яны здолелі зрабіць мужны маральны выбар, гэта галоўнае.
