Bridges-tunnels for wild animals to be built on a highway in Vitebsk region
In the Vitebsk region, a large-scale reconstruction of the R46 highway, connecting Lepel and Polotsk, is underway. During construction, both conventional technologies and new solutions are being used, writes BelTA.

Work began in November 2024. During this time, about 30 kilometers of the road have already been opened — from Polotsk to the village of Sarochyna. Approximately the same section is planned to be completed by autumn, in order to fully update the highway to Lepel.
During construction, both conventional technologies and new solutions are being used. For example, special crossings for wild animals are being built here for the first time. Unique bridges with tunnels are being erected over the road, under which moose, roe deer, and red deer will pass. Durable fences are being installed along forest sections to prevent animals from suddenly running onto the road and instead guide them to safe crossings.

The project is very large: around 70 people and dozens of units of equipment are working on it. Some workers commute daily, while others work on a rotational basis.
Special attention is paid to drainage. To prevent water from accumulating and swamps from forming, special pipes of various diameters are installed every 600-700 meters. Old materials are also reused — concrete is recycled and used to strengthen road shoulders.

The road surface is made multi-layered: first, a portion of the old asphalt is removed, then crushed stone, lower and upper layers of asphalt concrete are laid. After reconstruction, the road width will be about 12 meters. Although there will still be two lanes of traffic, throughput capacity and safety will significantly increase.
In addition to the surface itself, barrier fences, lighting, pedestrian elements, bus stops, and hundreds of road signs are being installed. The bridge over the Vydrytsa River is also being repaired.

In total, over a million tons of various materials, including soil and asphalt, are planned to be used on the site.
For the safety of drivers during the works, traffic is partially organized in one lane with traffic lights. After construction is complete, wear-resistant markings will be applied, including the so-called 'rumble strip' — it helps drivers not to fall asleep at the wheel.
Approximately 90 million rubles have been allocated for the implementation of the project this year. Overall, in the Vitebsk region, they plan to further increase funding for road works and continue modernizing other highways.
