Malta Bought ChatGPT Access for All Residents of the Country

Malta is the first country to launch a partnership of this scale.

The Maltese government has signed an agreement with the American company OpenAI, under which all residents of the country will receive free access to the ChatGPT service, writes Reuters.

"Malta is the first country to launch a partnership of this scale because we are not allowing our citizens to fall behind in the digital age. We are putting our people at the forefront of global change," commented Silvio Schembri, the country's Minister for Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects, on the deal.

He added that in this way, the Maltese authorities intend to transform "an unfamiliar concept into practical assistance" for citizens.

The first phase of the program, called "AI for All," will start in May. Access to free subscriptions will be overseen by Malta's Digital Innovation Authority.

To get free access to the advanced ChatGPT Plus version for a year, one will need to apply and complete a special online course, AI for All, developed by the University of Malta.

The program will also be available to citizens of the country residing abroad. OpenAI did not disclose the financial details of the agreement.
