A festival about mammoths and primitive people was held at the site of a Paleolithic settlement in the village of Yuravichy. Historians are skeptical of it
The "Mamont.by" festival took place on September 5 at the site of a primitive human settlement in Yuravichy, Kalinkavichy district. Remains of one of Belarus's oldest settlements, over 26,000 years old, were once found there, writes Reform.news.

The "Mamont.by" festival is held for the second time following the same scheme: a parade in primitive costumes, mammoth hunting, initiation into Cro-Magnon culture, fire-making, and dishes based on "prehistoric" recipes. Also — ritual dances around the bonfire, the "Path to Origins" excursion, photo zones, horse riding, children's playgrounds, and craft stalls.
At the heart of the project is a theatrical production, performed by local cultural workers in the presence of officials.

Belarusian experts and scientists reacted skeptically to this dubious amateur performance.
«It's interesting that similar museums at settlement sites exist all over the world, and one could learn from them how to organize quality events for guests, after which one would want to visit the museum again. For example, one could show the real activities of those ancient people: crafting stone weapons, processing bone with a stone awl, etc. Well, yes, it's not very massive and there's not much to laugh at, but the feeling of flint's hardness will remain in memory forever. But one needs to organize it, one needs to know how to do it oneself and how to present it properly to the audience. Why? It's much simpler to run around a bonfire and shout,» — quoted historian Raman Abukhovich's comment after the first festival, published by "Shtodzian".
And here's how a Homiel historian commented on the news about the award to Kalinkavichy specialists: «I am afraid for the preservation of the monument from their initiatives.»
The nature of this year's festival has not changed. Instead of a scientific approach, it's still "mammoth hunting", ritual dances around the bonfire, and the sports and entertainment program "Active Primitives".
Last year's festival became a silver medalist in the "Best Tourist Event Idea" category of the Russian Event Awards.
