Famous Egyptian TV host Sarah Khalifa was sentenced to death in Cairo in a large-scale case involving illegal drug trafficking, writes the Guardian, citing official Egyptian media.

39-year-old Sarah Khalifa is best known for the crime program "Mission Impossible." She also owns a plastic surgery clinic and a production company specializing in organizing parties and events.

Khalifa and 11 other defendants in the case were sentenced to death by hanging. They were accused of forming an organized criminal group specializing in extracting raw materials for drug production with the aim of selling them, as well as possessing and carrying unregistered firearms and ammunition.

The verdict was handed down after the court consulted with Egypt's Grand Mufti to obtain his religious opinion – a procedure required by Egyptian law in cases with the possibility of capital punishment.

The verdict is subject to appeal.

The state publication "Al-Ahram" reports that authorities confiscated more than 750 kg of drugs and raw materials, and also discovered two apartments used as laboratories, along with unregistered firearms and ammunition.

The court also sentenced Khalifa and other defendants to five years in prison in another case related to the abduction and assault of a young man.

Egypt applies the death penalty for premeditated murder, terrorism, some sex-related crimes, and drug trafficking.

According to data from the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms, 541 death sentences were issued in Egypt in 2025.
