Trump threatened to halt trade with EU if Canada joins the bloc
The US President allowed for the cessation of trade with Europe in certain areas in response to the possible granting of associate member status in the EU to Canada.
According to him, the rapprochement between the EU and Canada could be a "hostile act" towards the United States. "If the intent is bad, we will impose very high tariffs against Europe," Trump said.
He also noted that he considers the very idea of granting Canada associate member status to the EU "ridiculous," and called Ottawa "a terrible trading partner."
Later, the head of the White House stated that the United States is "carrying" European countries with a trade deficit of $200 billion.
"All we have to do is say, 'You know what? We're not trading with you anymore,'" Trump noted during a speech to his supporters in North Carolina.
