Lebanon becomes first in Middle East to abolish death penalty

On August 11, Lebanon's parliament voted for the complete abolition of the death penalty. Thus, the country became the first in the Middle East to officially abandon capital punishment and replace it with life imprisonment with forced labor, Al Jazeera reports .

The bill was passed by a majority of the 128 members of the Lebanese parliament. Deputies from the parliamentary bloc "Hezbollah" did not support the document.

Lebanese Justice Minister Adel Nassar called the decision a historic step for the country. He noted that the retention of the death penalty previously created problems for Beirut when trying to secure the extradition of suspects from states where capital punishment is banned.

The abolition of the death penalty was also welcomed by human rights defenders. Human Rights Watch stated that this is an important step forward in the field of human rights.

However, for more than 20 years, the death penalty remained in Lebanese law only formally, and in fact, the country had not carried out such sentences for many years. The last execution in Lebanon took place in January 2004.

After that, Lebanese courts still handed down dozens of death sentences, but their execution was stopped or the sentences themselves were later commuted. Thus, an unofficial moratorium on the death penalty was effectively in force in the country, which has now been legally enshrined.
