The Pacific island nation of Nauru changed its name to the Republic of Naoero (Repubrikin Naoero). The statement was published on the country's government page on Facebook.
Previously, it withdrew recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Naoero is a small island in the Pacific Ocean, 42 km from the equator. Its area is only 21 square kilometers, and the population is only 11 thousand people.
Naoero is the smallest independent republic on Earth, the smallest island nation, and the smallest state outside of Europe. Among independent states, only Monaco (2 square kilometers) has a smaller area, but it is a principality, and Vatican City (0.44 sq km) is a city-state and a theocratic monarchy.
The state has no official capital. The unofficial capital is Yaren, where the country's parliament and airport are located. 747 people live in Yaren.
The origin of the word Naoero is not precisely established.
