The Lake des Brenets, popular among tourists and located on the border of Switzerland and France, has almost completely lost its water after several months of drought and three waves of extreme heat that swept across Europe, writes The Independent.
Usually, thousands of holidaymakers come here in summer to swim, canoe, camp, and travel on tourist boats. However, navigation has now practically ceased.
The main reason was a sharp drop in the water level of the Doubs River, which feeds the lake. As a result, dozens of boats and ships were left stranded on the exposed muddy bottom. According to the owner of one of the tourist companies, he has already had to cut some staff, as the season is effectively ruined. The water level is now more than nine meters below normal and continues to drop by approximately 22 centimeters per day.
According to the Swiss meteorological service, only about half of the usual amount of precipitation has fallen in this region since April. The current drought is already comparable in scale to the most severe periods of 1976, 2003, and 2018. Forecasters also do not expect significant rainfall until at least mid-August.
Local residents note that similar droughts are occurring more and more frequently. The water that remains in the lake has turned brownish and transformed into a narrow strip, where fish and a few swans still survive. The famous Saut du Doubs waterfall, which is fed by this lake, has also almost completely dried up.
Residents of the region say that in normal years, this place looks fabulous, which is why today's scene causes them great sadness.
Drought problems are also observed in other parts of Europe. For example, the Danube has also significantly shallowed. The situation is particularly difficult in Hungary, where the river has lost so much water that cruise ships have started running aground. Rocks, sandbanks, and even sunken ships that were previously hidden have emerged from under the water.
