Hrodna authorities reported storm drains failed due to natural disaster
In connection with the heavy downpour that hit Hrodna on the evening of August 1, the Hrodna City Executive Committee urged city residents to be patient and careful.
Hrodna authorities admit that after the heavy and prolonged rainfall in Hrodna, the city faced serious problems with rainwater drainage. It is stated that due to the large amount of precipitation, the storm sewer system temporarily could not cope with the load.
As a result, separate sections of roads and sidewalks were flooded, which complicated traffic. Cases of flooding of underground pedestrian crossings and cars parked in low-lying areas were also recorded.
From photos and videos, it is visible that many streets are flooded, and some cars are almost completely submerged in water.
Almost the entire city was affected by the elements; reports of flooding are coming from various districts.
The previous major downpour in Hrodna was on July 27.
Currently, communal and emergency services have been put on an intensified work regime. Intensive water pumping is underway in the most problematic areas, as well as the cleaning of storm drain grates from debris that hinders water flow.
After the situation stabilizes and the water level decreases, a special commission will inspect all affected areas. The check will cover not only main streets but also courtyard driveways, underground passages, and technical manholes.
Residents and guests of Hrodna are asked to be understanding of the temporary inconveniences. Where possible, it is recommended to refrain from traveling by private transport, and pedestrians should be very careful, avoiding deep puddles, as open manholes or curbs may be hidden under the water.
