On August 25, 1991, the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic gained the status of a constitutional law.

The Declaration, which proclaimed the supremacy of the Belarusian Constitution on the territory of the BSSR, was adopted by the Supreme Soviet a year earlier, on July 27, 1990.
The document received the status of law on August 25, 1991, three days after the failure of the State Committee on the State of Emergency (GKChP) putsch in Moscow. At the same time, the activities of the Communist Party were suspended on the territory of the republic.
On September 19, 1991, the country became known as the Republic of Belarus, and the white-red-white flag and the "Pahonia" (Pursuit) coat of arms became state symbols.
